ABOUT SWS
Sewa of humanity is bestowed upon one whom God showers His benevolence and it His way of gifting his virtues to the chosen ones. Sewa must be selfless and ego-less.
Most humbly it is submitted that foundation of Sewak welfare society was unwittingly laid by two of its members, Jasvinder Singh and Surjit Singh, Delhi in 2008. They went to Dadri for arranging Gurmat Prachar but on seeing the Sikligar Sikhs living in inhuman and unhygienic conditions, decided to provide education and healthcare to them on priority . Their children numbering about 27 were admitted to a nearby school and all necessary books and stationery, uniform etc were arranged.
Healthcare was provided to them with help from Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara Surya Nagar. All these expenses were borne with dash wandh of members. Approximately Rs.2500/-per child was incurred. Even as school education was going on we went to their dera and taught their children basic principles of Sikhism. Literature was distributed among them and audio and video cds were also given to them for enchancing their level of knowledge. Pracharaks were regularly taken with us so that greater impression is cast on these Sikligars and they discover their sikh roots quickly. From time to time, oral tests were conducted among children and those giving correct answers were given encouragement besides cash and other prizes.
After Dadri, children at Chirori [Loni] were also adopted for education and the Dadri pattern was replicated. This went on for about 2 years. All the work was now supported by Jagdish Singh Bhatia, President Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Surya Nagar [Ghaziabad] who inspired his other members to support this noble cause whole-heartedly and spread the message amongst the sangat appreciably.
In April, 2010, Sewak Welfare Society as an organization came into being and helped in getting houses of 12 families at Dadri built by approaching various government functionaries and officers at the highest level. Loans were also arranged for poorest among them through Gurdwara Members.
In July, 2010 a broad survey of 52 deras of western Uttar Pradesh was conducted in which number of members of dera, male and female, no. of boys & girls, no. of boys and girls studying or otherwise, names of dera heads and their contact no’s were collected. Their problems were also recorded. Building upon this Survey, Baghpat was chosen and a paid full-time missionary was stationed there. A one- room Gurdwara is being used for imparting gurmat education to the children besides providing tuition to children up to class iii by the missionary himself. A separate tutor has been hired with local help for teaching children above class iii and tuition fees paid by us.
In August, 2010 all the heads and representatives of deras, which were surveyed, were invited and their problems discussed. Solutions to their problems and suggestions from them as well as distinguished scholars of panth were also recorded.
In Financial Year 2011-2012, 17 children at Baghpat and 19 children at Barouth have been admitted to public schools and all expenses on admission, fees uniform, bags and stationery etc are borne by our society.
In October, 2010 a two-day meeting of organizations working for Sikligars’ welfare from across the country was organized at a guest house in Surya Nagar. The members representing their respective organizations discussed their experiences and problems faced in educating and uplifting the Sikligars. All were appreciative of work done by Sewak Welfare Society.
In Janurary, 2011 we launched an awareness campaign regarding second phase of ‘Census’ launched by Government of India. Field work was undertaken locally as well as in habited by Sikligars in Haryana, UP and Delhi. All were educated on the following main points:
In financial year 2012-13, 62 children at Ustra , Sadiqpur, Prasoli and Rajpurgarhi were sponsored for educational expenses.

Incentive schemes are offered to children for excellence in studies besides rewarding them for attending school without break or going on leave sparingly. These initiatives have borne fruit and many Sikligars have topped their classes and others have shared the top honours in class.Gurmat is imparted by full-time teacher who stays inside these bastis and holds classes at different times for different age groups, depending upon the convenience of sangat.Women and girls who dropout from school are trained in stitching and embroidery to make them self-reliant and skilled.Sewing machines are distributed amongst Sikligar women to make them self-reliant and give them a semblance of independence.
From time to time, meetings are held to highlight the plight of Sikligars by inviting eminent personalities from various strata of the society. Pressure groups are formed to get OBC status to SIkligars in Uttar Pradesh.
These efforts will bring them back to Sikhi mainstream besides helping in availing facilities provided by Government to backward sections of the society.
Medical camps have been organized regularly for the benefit of public at large.
To impart in Sikligars a sense of belonging and closeness to panth, we at Sewak Welfare Society organize tours of historical gurdwaras. They are educated about historical importance of these Holy places by our team Missionary and our forgotten brethren thoroughly enjoy these Gurdham Yatras.
